I realized that I had more fun when playing against a human opponent than with the challenging AI that the team included in the game. Mode, as we both got into the back and forth of the match. The game has two modes: Story which has you running through a series of opponents and bonus rounds, and Vs. The game’s look works great when everything is in motion, and the 2D character stills used to tell the stories and set up the universe of Ultra Space Battle Brawl. The games art style is definitely unique, and it made me feel as if the team had decided to animate Muppets in a great and indie hand-drawn 2D style. One battle pinned me against two opponents who were both able to hit the ball and use their super moves at the same moment, making that scenario feel almost unwinnable, but some patience and trial and error eventually lead to victory. The AI is no joke and will act as if it knows how to anticipate your every move. The game is hard, and there is no difficulty slider, so it took me a few rounds to learn the rhythm and beat my first opponent in Story mode. Learning these moves so that you can use them at the right time, as well as knowing how to defend against them, is very important. They range from creating walls that bounce the ball back to superfast hitting, creating shadow balls, a vortex that will attract the ball to you to hit, and more. ![]() You have a dash maneuver that will help you clear distances faster, and each character has a unique super move you can launch once you’ve charged your meter. You can aim when you hit the ball to try and send it around your opponent or towards parts of the gem that have had its minions cleared away so that you can do direct damage. The goal is to hit your opponent gem five times to deplete their life bar. Your character can swing a weapon to knock the ball into play, and again as it bounces between you and your opponent. The match is laid out with a ball in the center and gem(s) protected by minion characters surrounding them. ![]() ![]() You face off against a series of opponents and need to beat them in a two out of three rounds set.
